Instagram’s Redesigned Icon – 6 months on
If you think back to May 2016 when Instagram launched their brand new app icon, there was outrage from users around the world. Many people hated the logo and some even mocked the Instagram design team for ‘creating a logo in Powerpoint’. This, of course, was nonsense, but nobody likes change and the first few days of the big change were tough for Instagram as a company, to say the least.
But here we are, 6 months on. Now it’s probably fair to say that people have grown to love the new logo. It represents a clean slate for Instagram, which is one of the more positive social media networks to date. The bright colours of the app icon make it stand out on the home screen, but one thing Instagram didn’t change was their typography, which is essentially their main logo. When you visit their website you can see that the bold gradient colours are only for the app, to help it stand out on the screen. But their flat design is in monochrome on their website and it really does look great.
This then brings up a valid question? Should more businesses be updating their logos or is it important to avoid aggravating fans, followers or customers by creating a new one. Well, many big companies have only made minor tweaks t their logos over the years, and this includes Google, Ford, Nike and Adidas. They haven’t played around and at the end of the day, they found their logo was working so why would they need to change it? Instagram obviously felt they needed to simplify their logo and it’s certainly now in line with the latest trends. Are they likely to change this again in the future, though? Who knows, but what we do know is that on the whole, the update for Instagram was needed and shame on the people who doubted it!
